Main vs Sidebar Articles

1/25- Turn in an overview paragraph for the article you will be writing. This paragraph should include a specific topic to be covered

Goals: Students will be able to differentiate between Main Articles and Sidebars
Students will understand the difference between the two types of articles
Students will begin to plan a series of Main/ Sidebar Articles

Read/ Discuss:
You've probably noticed that when an especially big news story happens, newspapers and news websites don't just produce one story about it but often many different stories, depending on the magnitude of the event.

What Is A Mainbar?
A mainbar, as its name implies, is the main news story about a big news event. It's the story that includes the main points of the event, and it tends to focus on the hard-news aspects of the story. Remember the five W's and the H - who, what, where, when, why and how? Those are the things you generally want to include in the mainbar.

What Is A Sidebar?
A sidebar, as its name implies, is a side story that accompanies the main story, the mainbar. But instead of including all the main points of the event, the sidebar focuses on just one aspect of it. Depending on the magnitude of the news event, the mainbar can be accompanied by just one sidebar or by dozens.

Example:

1.4.11.B: Write complex informational pieces (e.g. research papers, literary analytical essays, evaluations)

Create an organizing structure appropriate to purpose, audience, and context.
Use precise language and specific detail.
