2. Students will begin the introduction to Features Writing.
Goals:
Students will understand the difference between a feature story and a straight news story
Students will recognize the kinds of topics often covered in features stories
Students will learn the characteristics of a personality profile
Key Terms:
Hard-News- News involving timely, significant events, such as elections, a speech by a public official, or a report on a budget meeting
Feature Story- A story that focuses more on entertaining than on simply informing an audience
Soft News- Stories that are considered "Not Immediately Important" to a wide audience. (Personality features stories or "news you can use" columns
"Evergreen"-A term applied to material acceptable for publication at any time. Timeliness is not a factor.
News-Features- A feature story related to a breaking or developing news story
News Peg- A sentence or paragraph connecting a news-feature story to a specific item of news
Personality Profile- A thorough, in-depth feature story about one person.
Lessons:
Students will read chapters 11 and 13 in their textbooks.
Students will complete several exercises involving features writing

This lesson will serve as an introduction to Journalism II
This lesson will also expose students to advanced media
I. Students will film for a 20 second video
II. Students will script their idea using details how they will convey their message to the public
III. Students will video tape
IV. Students will edit and export

Goal: Students will create a 20 second video entitled WHAT IS BHS?
1. The class will divide itself into 2 groups
2. Students will brainstorm ideas for the project
3. Students will create an overview paragraph
4. Students will create a script stating what and who they will be filming
5. Students will make a list of all filming locations
6. Students must use the following elements:
A. 1 video effect B. Title C. Fade in/ Fade out (Transitions are optional)
7. Music is optional
8. The video must be exported as BHS in a folder named BHS
**Make a new folder for this project
