What is news?
Goals:
Students will recognize the elements of news: Timeliness, proximity, prominence, consequence, human interest, and conflict
Students will be able to measure news value by audience interest and need
Students will know how to generate ideas by brainstorming
Key Terms;
News Judgment- The knowledge and instinct a reporter calls on to determine whether an event is news
Localization- Writing a regional, national or international story to bring out an local angle
Timeliness- An element of news that has to do with how new or current the event is current. The newness of facts.Concentrate on advanced items. Not old
Proximity- An element of news that refers to the geographic nearness of a given event to your readers. Nearness to your place of publication. People like to read things that happen in their area.
Consequence- An element of news that refers to the importance of the event. The greater the consequence, the greater the news value. Example from book: It is more important to see that the star quarterback failed a math test before the championship game than if you failed a math test, why?
Human interest story- A story that causes the reader to feel such emotions as sorrow,pity,or amazement. Ex: girl trapped in a well, dog mourning a grave, youngest student/ teacher.
Conflict- An element of news that involves tension, surprise, and suspense, and arises with any good news topic-- sports, war, elections
Brainstorming- The art of obtaining many ideas in a short time
